Re: We have all had a most embarassing moment...........

I hope your sleep apnea test went better than mine. I could barely
fall asleep and I just felt so horrible with having everything
attached me to. I couldn't rest in the slightest. The nurse saw my
diapers though and made no mention of them (at Piedmont Hospital here
in Atlanta). I thought I would be embarrassed too, but realistically,
this is a nurse and she's probably seen a lot of things, some of them
that would be more of a stigma to most people. I do understand your
nervousness though.
-Will
hooking the electronic receptor nodes on my body for a sleep apnea
test. I had a noon appointment at my house, and we were in my bedroom.
I had taken my shirt off and was wearing disposable diapers and
plastic pants over them. As he was placing the nodes on and explaining
where the wires were to be placed my pants slipped right down to the
floor around my ankles leaving me with my plastic pants showing. I
pulled them up, and a few moments later, down they went. I guess the
technician was being polite and pretended not to notice. Then he was
going to show me what I needed to do once I got hooked up at night to
the monitor and had to remove the wires to use the bathroom. I told
him it wasn't going to be necessary to use the bathroom. He said that
many people need to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the
night, and I told him no, I wouldn't be, and I finally admitted that
to him that I wore diapers, and I would
person who he ever saw in diapers and admitted to being changed at
night, but I sure felt like the lone ranger at the time.

Ron,

Check out www.urdry.com

There are several products that allow you to choose the amount of capacity.

ron <boomer2480@...

can somebody recomend a pull up that has a little more capacity then
the attends adjustable underwear maximum absorbancy. I would concider
a disposable diaper if it was descreet enough to be worn under
clothing like the attends and did't have a deoderizer and was quite.

Re: Diapered At Work

2007-01-29 16:55:18

I wear diapers at work, you do not have to discuss it because they
do not need to know. You do ask them what kind of underwear they are
wearing. I work in a nursing home setting, so basically most people
there are wearing diapers. Most people know I wear diapers because
of the noise of the diapers and they can see the diaper outline in
the scrubs I wear.

I'm completly incontinent and have always used external condom caths,
due to skin irritation I've been using diapers more and more though.
I've used Depends only so far cuz they're always available.......are
attends better for absorbency and leakage issues? If so which style and
do they have taped sides or are they pull ups?........jeff

Re: [Incont] We have all had a most embarassing moment...........

2007-01-28 05:41:52

HI JEFF,
HERE'S A TRUE EXPERIENCE THAT HAPPENED TO ME WHILE ME AND MY WIFE WERE
OUT FOR A DAY OF SHOPPING.
WE LIVE IN JACKSON MICHIGAN, AND WE DECIDED TO DO A LIL SHOPPING IN A
TOWN WE USED TO LIVE IN ABOUT A 2 1/2 HOUR DRIVE FROM WHERE WE LIVE NOW.
I LOVE BOATS,AND THIS TOWN WE WENT TO IS A TOURIST TRAP.
IT ALSO HAS A HUGE BOARD WALK AND BIRTH'S FOR BOATS OF ALL SIZES.
I LOVE WALKING ON THE PIER AND JUST GAZE AT ALL OF THE DIFFERENT BOATS.
WELL, WE WERE WALKING DOWN A VERY CROWDED PEDESTRAN FILLED STREET.
I WAS WEARING A PAIR OF LOOSE SWEATS AND A TANK TOP.
I WAS WEARING ONE OF MY ATTENDS DISPOSABLE DIAPERS UNDERNEATH THE
SWEATS.
AS WE WERE WALKING, I FELT MY SWEATS SLIPPING A LITTLE, BUT THOUGHT
NOTHING OF IT.
WE CONTINUED WALKING, AND LOW AND BEHOLD, MY SWEATS JUST FELL BELOW MY
HIPS.
OBVIOUSLY EXPOSING MY DIAPER.
IT HAPPENED SO FAST, THAT MY WIFE JUST STOOD THERE AND WATCHED ME
HURRIEDLY TRYING TO PULL MY SWEATS BACK UP.
WE BOTH HAD A GOOD LAUGH.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND US WERE LAUGHING TO.
HOWEVER, NOT AT US, BUT WITH US.
WE HAD LUNCH WITH A FEW OF THE PEOPLE WHO CAUGHT MY UN-EXPECTED SIDEWALK
SHOW.
MADE NEW FRIENDS AS WELL.
COME TO FIND OUT THAT A COUPLE OLDER MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILY ARE
INCONTINENT, AND A CONVERSATION ENSUED REGARDING PREFERENCES IN
INCONTINENT APPAREL, AND OTHER WAYS OF DEALING WITH IT.
ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A GREAT DAY.
BIG HUGSSS,
TINYTONY :)

We have all had a most embarassing moment...........

2007-01-27 13:53:25

Being incontinent for more than 25 years I've had many "public
incontinent experiences", they're always humiliating but they still
happen to all of us..........lets tell each other our experiences and
laugh a little.
It's not very funny when it happens, but it seems you can sometimes
look back and laugh about it......
When I was 18 yrs. old I became partially paralized from an accident,
yes it sucks, but what can you do about it! ! !
Since I'm a guy I use an external condom style cath with tubing and a
leg bag.......you kind of get comfortable with it working correctly
and about that time....surprise!......something goes wrong.
Probably my most embarassing moment of all, which there are many,
happened at a company meeting......when my cath must have been kinked
instead of draining correctly and all of a sudden found myself
extremely soaked and smelling of pee.........it didn't go unnoticed
as a very good friend of mine, which happens to be a very beautiful
woman, got a very good look at what had happened, needless to say I
made a quick exit in my wheelchair and went home, took the rest of
the day off and worried what everyone thought........even though I
think most people knew what happened, no one looked at me any
differently and to this day they are all great frinds of
mine.........including the girl that saw it happen infact she is one
of my dearest friends to this day.
If nothing else something like this happening tells you who your real
friends are...........
If you've had a most embarrassing moment lets share, we can all use a
laugh........it sucks, but it's part of our lives.......Jeff

Diapered At Work

2007-01-27 07:25:02

I am interested in knowing a few opinions about this subject.
1. How do you think employers think about hiring employees that are
incontinent or that simply wear diapers? (Since there are a lot of
other people trying to get hired, they would choose someone else.)
2. In the real world, does this affect the chances of you getting
hired? (Yes.)
3. If an employer were to find out that you wear diapers, in the real
world what do you think they would be more accepting of needing to
wear, or just wearing for fun/comfort/etc? (Need to wear is more
acceptable as it's a medical reason, just wearing might seem way too
weird for a lot of people.)
4. Do you indicate that you are incontinent on your job application? (No.)
5. What do you think the chances would be of a network
designer/engineer getting job if the employer knew he was
incontinent/diapered? (Less then normal.)
Again, this is in the current job market, not in an `ideal world' job
market. My thoughts or answers are in ( ). Also, feel free to add or
discuss any of your other comments, suggestions, or experiences on
this topic.

Suggest Your Incontinence Links

2007-01-25 23:12:14

Hello all,
I'm reworking the links page on my website to try and provide the
best links on the internet to people suffering from incontinence.
The current focus of our links page is on the benefits of kegel
exercises, but I have no problem expanding the content to include
links to other important incontinence related informational
resources. The current links page is at
http://www.kegelcompare.com/resources.html
The new and improved version of this page will also include a brief
description of the content users can expect to find on the other end
of the link they click to. Since I am reworking the current links
list this is a perfect time to suggest links that would be
appropriate for kegelcompare.com and may benefit the 2000+ people
that land on this page per month. If you have a link you think
should be available on this page please let me know and feel free to
include your own description of the link in any corespondence.

Your message has very little information in it, which makes
giving any kind of support nearly impossible. Could you tell
us a bit more about yourself, what problems you're having,
what your feelings and thoughtsare, what you've done for
diagnosis and protection? That would give us a WHOLE lot
better basis to offer suggestions and advice!
My first advice for those who are newly incontinent is to get
to a urologist who specializes in incon. MANY tines incon
can be completely cured, and if not, can be reasonably well
controlled.
Looking forward to more information.

Does anyone know of a a reusable product not as bulky as a diaper and
plastice pants that I can use for my leakage . I have tried protective
underware and they are ok but the cost is starting to get a pit too
much . I'm looking for something like regular underware that I can
wash and use again . I thought I saw something that looks just like
underware but cant find it now . It takes just a thin pad that is either
washable or disposable . Does anyone know who has a producit like this

New Solution for Male Incontinence

2007-01-21 05:36:45

I recieved a sample of the AlphaDry system, and I have to say I am
impressed. It is an external catheter type system, but with a resevoir
and drain valve built in so you don't need clumsy leg bags and such.
It took probably two hours for me to get comfortable with having the
device on, and it does feel a little weird as the resivoir starts to
fill (like having a baloon in your underwear. But it is very discreet
and kept me dry all day with regular draining (every 2-3 hours, about
as often as 'normal people' use the rest room.)
I still wear diapers at night to give my penis a break from the condom,
but it's nice to have a diaper-free solution for daytime use, that can
also be worn at the gym, in a pool, etc. I can wear shorts again!
As a backup, I wore a diaper over the device until I felt sure it
wouldn't leak.
You can find out more about it at www.alphadry.com

Re: [Incont] Hello

2007-01-20 17:45:10

You may try Angel Fluff Diaper Company, they carry contured as well as pull-ons, & will make them to order as well. If you are trying to save money, get a pair of non-stretch cotton briefs of the correct size, take it apart at the seams, duplicate the measurements and add appropriate padding, add velcro closures, or just stitch them back up. [add the required additional fabric to enclose the padding, and since they are non-stretch, a snap, button, or velcro closure at the waist]. Urge Incontinence is often more than just moderate, so plastic, or rubber pants will be needed for protection. Salk and Serenity brands are used for light to moderate wetting, cotton diapers, soaker-briefs, etc. are used for moderate to heavy wetting. If the individual is constantly in public, you may consider disposable pants or diapers, both available at Walmart, Target, K-Mart, Walgreens, Longs, etc.

multiple casts and has avoided surgery so far. As far as I know he
is still in the brace. I haven't heard from her since I was sick. I

Re: First Ortho Visit Today

2007-01-20 10:36:09

Sounds like you had every right to be mad. I hate the way some of
our medical system has become and we can blame most of it on
insurance companies. That's another story for another time.
Since he is in stage 2, here are some things to expect. This is a
painfull period. This is when the dead bone is starting to fracture
and brak up. This is in preperation for absorbtion. He may have a
fever from time to time and realy get stiff. Some kids start wetting
the bed if he was already dry. It is normal. Flexability is real
important, that was why PT is ordered. They should show you
stretches to do and they are important. You will hear the term ROAM.
This stands for range of motion. The flexablity helps limit
deformaty and help keep the hip centered.
I'm basing what I write on what your doctored ordered. It sounds
like the hip is heavily involved or else limiting weight bearing
wouldn't had been order.
A new term for you is containment. This means the hip is
maintaining spacing and is staying centered. If he is unable to stay
loose, they may surgicaly release the tight muscels and place him in
petrie cast. This may be short term or extended based on how his hip
and muscels react. A brace may follow to hold the legs appart.
The whole issue with legs appart is to keep the hip in a position
to prevent damge. As the hip losses bone, it can move around in the
socket. This is called dyspasia. The doctor needs to prevent
dysplasia. This causes impingment, flattening of the hip. Surgery
like a varas rotational osteotmy may be offered to prevent the
dysplasia.
All that I'm writing is all future possibilities. I mean in no way
to scare you but to get you familiar with the terms and
possibilities.
Sorry for any misplelled words. I'm trying to do this between
restroom visits because I'm not over my bug yet and I don't have a
spell checker on the computer. I'll be around from time to time so
ask me anything. I get on line in the evening because of the cost of
dial up at home. .90 cents per minute. Brian

Re: [Information-perthes] First Ortho Visit Today

2007-01-20 00:14:20

At his stage, you do not want him up and walking ...ceasing activity is very important. It is hard but well worth it. Coloring books, computer games, movies, books to read, depending on his age...Give him a corner of the couch and make it his...He needs this quite time.

As for the doctor...shame on her...I have a great doctor with the WORSE bedside manner ever but he has never told me he did not have time for us.
Meridith <mom2nqc@...

Well, we had our first ortho visit today. It was awful. The doctor
was awful. She rushed us from the minute we got in and told me that
she was "too busy" to answer my questions. So stressful and so
upsetting.
She said that he is in stage 2, but she doesn't know how much of the
head is involved. She gave us an order for P/T and asked that we
cease all his physical activities and rest as much as possible. She
did not order any additional films. We won't be going back to her. I
was so upset when we left there since I feel like I know nothing more
than I did when we got there.
I got an appointment in a couple of weeks with the head of ortho at
Children's San Diego. In the meantime, we'll restrict his activities
and start the p/t. It can't hurt, right?
Thanks for listening....Meridith

and the spreader bar.I was wondering if a raised toilet seat, with
or without arms, would be helpful? Also what kind of seating chairs
can be used? (She does like my recliner when here.) Can she still
sit in one with the brace? Also, we both have desk chairs so how
would they be.There is so very little information on any practical
matters.I am wondering about what to put under the brace (T Shirt)?
Also, the big question is under panties. I have only seen pictures
of that brace, and can not figure out whether low rise panties would
go under the side bars and be able to take down for the bathroom?
I had read some articles posted that mentioned those zippered
convertible pants (pants to shorts) as being a good idea.
Also Barbara Kelly said there were zipped or snapped athletic pants
that might be a good idea.Does any one have any ideas on these
matters?
Thank you

New member Nancey asked me this, and since I've not had the
experience with bracies I hope you all can help her. I told her that
I know Jenny, Alice, and I dont remember who else has had the
experience with the bracies. So please, help her to give her some
advice as to what to do. We all go throug lcp differently and since
I don't know too much about the brace subject I know you all can
give her way more advice than I can. Thank you all. In my Prayers.

Welcome Meredith!
I am probably one of the least experienced on the board but my son
had Perthes at your son's age. He was fortunate in that is was mild
considering what more experienced board families have had to endure.
Mark resolved without intervention. I'm once again visiting this
group, as he has had issues with his healthy hip recently, and I am
waiting for MR Arthrogram results. He is now almost 12 and the
knowledge I've gained here has taught me that at this age, we may be
dealing with different issues; where a "wait and see" approach may
not be the way to go.
I knew nothing of Perthes when this all started six years ago. I was
NOT satisfied with "wait and see" at first. It took a second opinion
(after researching their Perthes experience/being comfortable with
their credentials, etc.)to confirm and allow me to let go a bit.
The knowledge you gain here will be invaluable as far as helping you
differentiate between when it's okay to "wait and see" and when it's
time for action. Being able to see with your own eyes others' x-rays
to be able to compare with your child's; the ability to post a
concern and have someone else say, "It's okay, we had that
too...here's what we did, or how it worked out..". The support is
immeasurable!
Here's hoping your experience is mild with a good resolution. If it
goes southward (remember, your child is at a good age for good
outcome!), I can't think of a better group of folks to help you on
your journey.

Hi Meridith, My name is Jenny and my son is Jared, he is 7 years old. He was diagnoesd just a year ago while he was just 6. Jared is tall for his age (90th percentile) Being just 6 years old at the onset of symptoms it seemed he had time on his side. Ortho took the wait and see approach because of his age, the younger the better. In April Jared lost his range of motion (ROM) He was referred to a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon (Dr. Ernest Sink at The Childrens Hospital in Denver) He began active and aggressive treatment because Jared has whole head involvement. Jared has had a petrie cast (a cast on both legs with a bar in between that looks like the letter A) to restore ROM, and a femoral varus osteotomy (a surgical procedure to tip the head of the femur deeper into the hip socket). He had the FVO in August and is getting stronger everyday, he walks without crutches. Because of the whole head of the femur being involved Jared required aggressive treatment. Most
children who develop LCP do not need active treatment, a wait and watch seems to work for most. Be sure to find out how many others the doc has treated with LCP. Many ortho docs do not actively treat LCP. If you have concerns or questions the doc cannot answer be sure to find out if they know who does. If you are going to Childrens in San Diego they have a couple of docs who know alot about LCP. You have a young one with LCP. You have more time on your side than some. I remember when Jared was first diagnosed, I wished he had a broken leg or a sprain that would heal in just a few short weeks. LCP may take 2-3 years. It is life altering but it is not life threatening. Don't be afraid to ask questions of your docs and their assistants, but be careful how you do it because you will have a long term relationship with them and you want that to be maintained. The cause of LCP is not known, there is nothing we did (or you, or anyone else) that caused this, nor is
there anything to do to prevent it. Time is a great healer, and this disease makes us take time for things we may not have slowed down for. Ask questions of the ortho docs and ask questions here. There are alot of families who have experienced alot with LCP here. I hope you find out alot at the appointment. Take care.

Jenny/Jared 7
Meridith <mom2nqc@...

Thank you for the warm welcome. If you wouldn't mind, would those of
you who are active in the group tell me a little about yourselves and
your children? I'm trying to piece it together, but there are so many
postings to get through! I mentioned already that my son is 5 1/2 and
we live in San Diego.
I'm anxious to see the ortho tomorrow and start to get some questions
answered. Someone (I think Terry) mentioned that the ortho may take
a "wait and see" approach. Do you recommend a second opinion just to
make sure we are doing everything we can? Since he is young, I want
to be as aggressive as we can to minimize issues down the road.
I met with his school nurse yesterday to talk about pain meds, etc and
she had another student with LCP last year so she was well informed
which is a relief.
Enough about us - would you mind sharing about you?
Thanks! Meridith

Re: Jared and limping

2007-01-18 13:18:56

I agree with a request for physical therapy. He will loose some
roam at first but it should increase as he goes threw all the
motions of therapy. I'm sure some of his limping is from fear of
pain. Physical therapy may be painfull for him also, but the push
will be there to continue. I hope I helped. I'm still not quite
normal and it's still a little hard to concentrate. Brian

Sorry so slow on the reply...but I bet Brian is excited about the "good to go" for halloween.
Debbie <debfmly@...

Hi all. I took Brian to his ortho doc for his check up. No xrays were
taken. The doctors loves his range of motion and how firmly planted
his hips feel. What ever that means. We are still in the brace for
now. The doctor said he should be good to go come Halloween. Debbie

Re: [Information-perthes] Jared and limping

2007-01-17 22:25:47

Jenny...it is to funny you asked this question. I was going to pose the same one this morning.

Tanner walks with legs spread...sorta like a cowboy who has been on a horse to long.

Is this how Jared walks? Tanner has said it makes his hip feel better. The doctor disagrees. The PT seems to think it is because he has low muscle tone...all around. I do not know.
bertschjenny <bertschjenny@...

Hi Brian, If you feel up to it maybe you could help with something.
Jared is getting stronger each week. But most times he walks like he
has pain. He seems to walk alot like he did in April when he lost
range of motion. The ortho doc gave Jared some new exercises to try
but they are really difficult. Jared does not seem to be able to
stand on the LCP leg alone. He has alot of soreness in the thigh and
hip muscles. I made an appointment for the end of October, that was
the earliest one with his ortho doc. Should we be considering or
maybe encouraging a referral to physical therapy? I know the strength
will come back with time, but with that time, how much are we
sacrificing ROM? If you have some info to share that would be great.
Thanks for all your help. Get Better.

Update on Jesse, Jareds brother

2007-01-16 23:48:04

Just an update on Jesse, Jareds brother. Today the ortho took more
xrays of his right arm. They removed the cast. The road rash has not
healed so he is in a brace for the next two weeks. I have to change
the dressing two times a day for the next two weeks. They have us
using adaptec and telfa pads and rolled gauze. The bone that was
fractured is straight now and is healing. The other bone is bent,
they called it a plastic something (I'm sure Brian knows). He has to
be careful not to fall and cause any new injury. More xrays on the arm
and foot in two weeks. It is hard to keep him still and keep the foot
elevated. He wants to run and play with all the neighbors. Thanks
for all the prayers for our family, we sure have needed some extra.

Hi gang. I'm getting better. This medication I'm on is hard on a
body. It's killing everything in my system including the good. After
10 days of this I start on pro biotics that should bring me back to
normal. I hope because my butt cann't take much more. lol.. Brian

Hopefully he starts feeling beter. Just wanted to give you all a first

Re: [Information-perthes] Newly diagnosed

2007-01-16 06:19:41

Hi Meridith, I'm glad you found this group. There are great people here to help with just about any question or concern you might have. Just go ahead and ask away. My son Jared is 7 and has LCP in his left hip. He was diagnosed a year ago. Let us know what the ortho doc says, he might say "wait and see". Don't be too concerned about that response, it's the typical first visit response. Do expect more xrays. Hopefully we can help you through this.

Jenny/Jared7
Meridith <mom2nqc@...

Hi everyone - I just stumbled upon this group and after reading
through the messages, I'm so glad I did. My 5 1/2 year old son has
just been diagnosed with unilateral Legg Calve Perthes. His
pediatrician ordered x-rays after he was limping and complaining of
leg pain off and on for a couple of weeks. We see the orthopedist for
the first time later this week. In the meantime, I scour the internet
for info - which may or may not be a good thing! It seems like the
treatment and prognoses are so varied, it's hard to not be overwhelmed.
Anyway, I hope you'll have me. This seems like a great group with
lots of information to be shared. I'm anxious to find out as much as
I can to give my boy the best outcome possible.
Thanks, I look forward to getting to know you better.

Welcome to the group. I can guess what Brian will ask. How much of
his hip is involved and what stage is he in. These will be questions
you may need to ask your doctor about. I know Brian is very
knowlagable on this and many other othopedic topics. He should be
back on the group soon. He;s sick as I'm sure you have read. Make
sure you little one takes it easy. Rest does wonders. My son had
both of his hips involved. I know from experience your son's age is
in a great catigory for this. Terry

I found out I was prescrided the wrong type of medicine today. Seems
the emergency room doctors weren't 100%. I had a parcial scope done,
emergency. So far no leads on the blood other than infection. This is
the worst I've felt, feeling like a full blown flue. Hopefully the new
meds kick in soon. I hope to be up and going by the end of the week.

Re: Question about arthritis later in life

2007-01-13 00:23:04

Without seeing the paper, I can't say much. But I do know most of the
older perthes adults I've talked with suffer from some sort of hip
problems. Some have had multiple replacements. Some are like me.
Irritable but not restricted. I realy don't see how anyone can write a
guarentee of arthritis without seeing all adults who had perthes. He
would need to follow up on thousands. So take it for what it's worth,
an opinion. I think your doing what's best for Brian in the long run.
You have avoided surgery which is great. Only god knows what the
future holds. Brian

Question about arthritis later in life

2007-01-12 18:06:03

Brian, or anyone. I read a file posted by Barb on the other group.
I'm going to ask if I can add it here. The doctor wrote that the older
a child is, he or she will suffer from arthritis. Brian is 8 and falls
into the category the doctor wrote. Can anyone fill me in more about
this? Debbie

Re: [Information-perthes] Bad news update

2007-01-12 14:39:03

Hi Brian, That altitude thing can really play one over on alot of people. I've lived at a mile high all my life, but I still know if I go into the mountains to drink plenty of water and take it slow. We've made trips to Tennesse, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida and learned the hard way about the expansion of liquids. We were driving just outside Atlanta coming up from Tampa, and we heard a loud noise. We thought if was a tire blow out, nope, it was a bottle of shampoo exploding from the altitude change. After that we learned to squeeze the bottles to relieve the pressure before heading home. I hope you make it home okay. Rest will do you good. There are plenty of people who want to see you home safely. Take care, praying for you.

Jenny/Jared7
Brian <bbaker904@...

Thanks everyone for the prayers. I just got back from the emergency
room. The doctor doesn't think the bleeding is major enough to cause
problems yet. Jenny should know about altitude. Don't go up unless
your up in health. That was the main problem. The climb from low
ground in Nebraska to altitude in Wyoming. My system was swollen from
the stomach bug with gas and liquid. As I went up, it expanded. It
overstretch areas causing tears. Now it is all infected. I'm way
beyond a stomach bug now. The doctor put me on 2 different antibiotics
and one other stomach medicine. I'm not allowed to drive tomorrow and
if things get worse(bleeding), I'm to call an ambulance. I just hope
that doesn't happen. Live and learn. I don't go west very often, but
maybe some of you can get a tip from what happened to me. Like other
posts, sorry this is personal and not perthes related. Thank you again
for the friend ship on the group. I wish I could give you all a big
hug. Brian

Brian, you are a friend. Your group so it doesn't matter what you
post. You let us post other things other than perthes and you help
no matter what. Sleep well and I hope the medicine stops the
bleeding. I never knew going up in altitude could do that. We were
thinking of taking the kids to Vale Co. next year. We better make
the trip in stages now. Brian prayed for you and so will I. Debbie

why I didn't call you Debbie because I drove within 30 miles of your

within the next 24, I will be calling a cab to take me to an emergency
room. If this happens, I will be away from the group for a while. This
is something that has happened in the past and it doesn't alarm me.
Growing up with abdominal problems, these things happen. It's not a
lot of blood but enough I can see it. The bad part is, I have no clean

Re: [Information-perthes] Jenny's other son

2007-01-10 20:51:36

On Tuesday the pediatricians office called to check on Jesse and they said to bring him in and they would clean his wound, good thing, the dressing needed to be changed. Today(Wednesday) I took Jesse to Ortho. They put a cast on his arm and will put on a new one in two weeks and then two weeks later t give him brace. They put a walking boot on his foot and said about a month for that, but it will probably take longer for the swelling to go away. They were able to straighten the arm by molding the cast, yikes. Jesse likes his new freedom to be able to walk, no more hopping or wheelchair. We were not able to get to see Dr. Sink(Jared's ortho Doc) He is so booked and is only in this office on Mondays and is off the next two Mondays. The PA and the ortho tech took good care of Jesse. I think we have a personal parking spot at the clinic now. Jesse is on the mend. They bounce back so quickly. Thanks for the prayers, they really help.

Sorry gang. I'm still in California and still very sick. I'm trying
to participate between runs to the bathroom. Let me say this, make
sure your kids are washing their hands good and stay away from
restaurant food for a little while. I think I caught this bug from a
hand made pizza in York Nebraska. With in hours of that, I started
getting sick. I tried to eat a normal meal today and it went right
threw me. I'm 4 days into this now and the stomach cramps are near
unbearable. For me with my pain tolerance, that says a lot. Hopefully
none of your kids have to go threw this. Take care, Brian

Good news Kayren. It is amazing how helpful other students can be especially when a teacher shows they care. Jared doesn't use the wheelchair anymore, which is good because now Jesse needs to use it, ha ha. I showed the school nurse a website called 1800wheelchairs.com and they had a 16"wide seat wheelchair for a hundred and ten dollars and free shipping, so they found the money and bought it. The smaller kids fit into it better than the other chair in the clinic which is made for an adult. Our school has 1450 kids in K-12. So we have lots of different size kids and alot of them so it made sense to buy another chair, especially so cheap. I hope today goes as well yesterday for Michael.

Well Micheal went to school yesterday, it went pretty good. I took him
to class b4 any kids could ramble the hallway to the classrooms so he
wouldn't get knocked over. Which I'd already told his teachers I'd be
bringing him in early and that's fine with them. His teacher that
teaches him science and math was glad to see him, she has him seated
at the front of the room. The class was glad to see him, he was a
little nervous even with using the walker yesterday. When I went to
pick him up his teacher told me that they had a wheelchair in the
office and that he got tired and she went to the office to get it
since he had some classes on the other side of the building and he got
to use it, one of his classmates pushed him in it, he said it was big
and he couldn't wheel it himself, which I'm glad he couldn't cuz the
one at home he likes to do wheelies in it.They told me not to worry
about bringing the one from home that if he needs the one at school
that they will use it. Which that's a help to me, since the one he has
at home takes up the whole back seat of my car and won't fit in the
trunk of my car.I hope today goes well for him also. kayren

Re: Jareds brother Jesse

Do NOT unwrap the splint. That is a big no no right now. I worked
first in emergency medical in the fire department. Right now it may
look worse than it is. There may be a lot of dead tissue on the
surface that may make it look bad. The ortho doctor may de-breed it
before doing anything long term to the arm. De-breeding means
removing dead tissue. It normally takes about five days for the body
to make a smooth resurface under road rash. Once it is set, no
bacteria can get threw because it's new skin. Area that are bloody
will scab over and have the same effect. One cleaning, done at the
initial emergency visit is all that is necessary. If you take the
splint loose you could move a bone and cause a deformity only
repairable with surgery. It may look worse than it is. Road rashes
normally do. I've seen my share.
Any pain at this point should be handled with over the counter meds
like Tylenol. Ice on his arm and leg will work real good but it will
really hurt when you first apply it. This will take down any
swelling and give the ortho doctor an easier time with his
treatments. See if he can stand a bag of ice on his arm. Maybe not
directly at first, but keep trying. This is what we do once we have
them on a stretcher. It will really numb the area but it takes time.

Brian, I forgot to ask you something. Jesse has alot of road rash on
his forearm, it covers about two-thirds of the top of the forearm. It
has been two days now since the accident, should I unwrap the splint
and the gauze and clean his arm? It seems like to me that if I don't
wash it out it might be easy for infection to set in. And it this
seems like something I should do, how do I manage his pain while I'm
cleaning? He's tough but not with mom. We don't see orhto until
wednesday morning. Also, what do you think they might consider doing
about casting since he has such a large wound area? If you don't have
answers, that's okay, I'm just not sure if your ortho experience
covered anything like this. Thanks for you help Brian.

You might try some kaopectate and some yogurt with live cultures in it. The Danimals drinkable yogurt has live cultures. oh, and wash you hands alot. Hope you all feel better soon.

Michael starts back to school in the morning. He's doing good on his
walker, still scared of the crutches. He took a fall on them the
other day and won't get back on them. Not going to make him sinces
he's using the walker. His english teacher, who did his homebound
has agreed to tutor him after school for a few hours. Which this
will be a great help for him, since he likes to argue with me about
school work at home. I'm glad she offered when I said i was going to
get him a tutor. I'm going to be picking him and his siblings up
from school for a while, I already drive them to school each
morning, but I don't feel comfortable with him riding the bus home,
which they all hate riding the bus anyhow. He has bible studies at
school and has to ride a bus to go off school grounds to this, but
his Mrs.Waddill, his teacher said she could help him get on and off
the bus, that's his english teacher, but i still don't know if i'm
comfortable with this, Michael is so picky about who picks him up,
he wouldn't let me for the first two weeks, his dad had to do it,
but he only goes one day a week to bible study and this wk he doesnt
go due to they don't go to school on that day, so I still have a
week to think about it. i'm nervous about him going back tomorrow
and I think he is too. The only reason I dont want him to use the
wheelchair is becuz I know he'd be showing off in around his friends
in the hallway, so I don't think he'll be using it at all. His right
leg is feeling better and he's starting to move it alot more. Just
hope tomorrow goes well for him. Hope all are doing well.kayren

Debbie, I know the feeling on that one, Michael had this other week
and I just thought on my! my daughter has bladder problems at night so
she has to wear pull ups, but with the cast I couldnt put them on
Michael, so I got some depends for him to wear. I know they are
expensive to buy, but when Michael had this problem they worked, he
said he felt like a baby, but I couldnt keep getting him to the
bathroom so much so I bought them and changed him like a baby. I dont
know how you feel about doing this, but as for me it worked out for

Wow Jenny you have had your hads full and I must say Jesse was very lucky with his accident. I know my husband four wheels alot and he better wear his helmet. He has flipped it twice. It is easily done, unfortunately.

Hang in there, keeping you and your family in our prayers and just think with the grandkids....they will be your worry but a totally different one. Oh and the 19 y/o we have one of those too...she is in school, but tends to think the boyfriend is more important than her test coming up next week. She better pass or she will be getting much more than a day with him...I am so fed up.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to let everyone know we got back from our
trip to Grand Junction this weekend. We went to our daughters baby
shower with her in-laws. All the guys rented four wheelers and an
ATV with a roll bar (used for hunting trips). Our son Jesse was
riding with our son-in-law Terry, when something went wrong and they
flipped. Jesse's right arm was pinned under the roll bar and his
left foot got pinned under the ATV. He was buckled in a harness but
did not have his helmet on. It looks like he has just one bone
broken in his forearm and one bone broken in his foot. He is doing
okay. We will see the same ortho doc that Jared sees, on monday. It
is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Grand Junction to Denver. We stayed an
extra night to be well rested to drive home safely. The ortho doc
in Grand Junction said Jesse might have to have surgery on his arm.
We said we know a good ortho doc in Denver, personnaly. I was going
to call the wheelchair company on monday to come pick up the
wheelchair that Jared no longer needs, but now I don't have to make
that call, since Jesse needs it. At school I will just have to swap
the boys desks. Jesse will have the wheelchair desk and Jared will
have the regular desk. What a crazy year it has been, and we still
have a lazy 19 year old at home who needs to do someting, anything.
and Both of our daughters are expecting babies this winter, they
have both been married a couple of years. I am looking forward to
the trip to the Grand Caymen in January. I think we may have earned
that vacation in more ways than one. Things will be okay here, it
just takes time to heal.

Brian <bbaker904@...

Hi gang from Evanston Wyoming. I found a wifi spot. I just wanted to
share this. It's for those who have a child in casts or braces. As
I've told some of you, I now wear a brace for my knee. Yes I'm wearing
as prescribed. This brace prohibits full extension of the knee and
keeps it aligned. I would think other parts of my body would be
effected but boy was I wrong. Back, feet, ankles all hurt. Even the
leg on the other side cramps up. If I would ask a doctor about this he
would say it was related to the brace, but I know better. The only way
any of us can have an understanding of what our child feels is to go
threw the same process. So the next your child complains about pain
away from the source of the hip, remember what I wrote. A brace
changes alignment. This can throw the whole body out of wack and it
can cause pain else were. Just don't let it bother you unless it gets
bad.
My brace is working. No more pain on that lateral side. It just hurts
everywhere else now. Oh the fun of getting older. God bless you all.

Debbie,

Tanner has been in his brace since March...

so its like this...

march to June 15 ...full time brace wearing 24/7

June 15 - mid Aug...no brace during day only at night

mid August to Sept 3 or so.... - brace 24/7

Sept till curret- wears it only at night

We were told he will probably wear his Scottish Rite Brace at night for the next 2 to 3 years.
